Soy is highly valued as a component in animal feed. Soybean meal is highly digestible for livestock and an important source of protein. However, soybean cultivation poses the risk of conversion and/or deforestation of land. Due to the rising global demand and the increasing expansion of cultivation areas, there is a need for action to ensure that the cultivation of soybeans is free from deforestation and conversion. Therefore, QS has developed a mandatory module together with all stakeholders in the supply chain, directed at feed producers and retailers.

Together with representatives of the entire supply chain, QS developed the Module QS Soyplus to the QS Guideline Feed Sector. Since January1, 2024, it has been mandatory for all feed producers and traders processing or trading soy products. As a result, all soy used in animal feed in the QS scheme has come from sustainably certified cultivation since 01.01.2024.

As the cultivation of soy in the countries of origin is not certified by QS, sustainability standards for primary production are provided by QS for recognition. The criteria are based on the FEFAC Soy Sourcing Guideline and QS-specific requirements for certification. Under the first of the two links below you will find an overview of all the criteria that QS sets for the sustainable cultivation of soybeans and which must be fulfilled by standard setters who have themselves benchmarked via QS. Under the second link you will find an overview of the QS recognized standards for soybean cultivation.

Certification of feed companies

For all downstream actors, i.e. oil mills, traders and compound feed manufacturers who handle and process soy, QS offers certification in accordance with the Module QS Soyplus. Here too, QS offers the option of benchmarking for comparable standards. The benchmarking list for Chain of Custody standards can be found here. An overview of the Chain of Custody standards already recognized by QS can be found here.
